Bastrop, Louisiana - Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop F started their investigation into a deadly crash involving a cyclist on US 425 near Town and Country Road, at around 6 am on Saturday, April 20, 2024. The crash resulted in the death of Matthew Courson, a 50-year-old resident of Bastrop, Louisiana.

Initial findings indicated that Courson was cycling on the northbound shoulder of US 425 when a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Madison Cox, 24, collided with him from behind for unknown reasons.

Courson was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. Cox and her passenger in the front seat, who were wearing seat belts, were uninjured.

After further investigation, Louisiana State Police indicated that it was found that Cox was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. She was arrested and taken to Morehouse Parish Jail on charges of vehicular homicide and driving on roadway laned for traffic . Cox's breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level over double the legal limit. The crash is still being investigated.

Many times, Troopers witness the devastating outcomes of avoidable crashes. They advise drivers to make a plan before drinking alcohol, as it can affect vision, coordination, and reaction time. It's important to never drive under the influence or ride with someone who is impaired, and always wear a seatbelt.

In the year 2024, Troop F has looked into 11 deadly accidents, leading to a total of 12 fatalities.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
