Lake Charles, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a collision involving two pedestrians at the intersection of LA Hwy 3059 (Pujol Road) and Luke Powers Road in Calcasieu Parish on the evening of November 9, 2023, at around 8 pm. Tragically, Corey James Anderson, aged 31 and from New Iberia, Louisiana, lost his life in the incident.
The preliminary investigation revealed that both pedestrians were walking in the eastbound lane of travel on LA 3059 when they were struck by a 2009 Dodge pickup truck traveling in the same direction. Both pedestrians were reportedly wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the crash. Anderson suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other pedestrian sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital in the Lake Charles area. The driver of the Dodge was unharmed.
Toxicology samples were collected from both Anderson and the driver of the Dodge for analysis as part of an ongoing investigation into the crash.
Troopers are emphasizing that pedestrians should exercise increased caution when walking near roads, recommending measures such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and maintaining a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic to reduce pedestrian-related crashes. It is also crucial for pedestrians to assume that approaching motorists may not see them, particularly during nighttime hours.
In 2023 alone, Troop D has investigated 30 fatal crashes resulting in 33 deaths.
