Louisiana Man Cited by Wildlife Agents for Closed Season Squirrel Hunting

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported on September 26, 2022, that enforcement agents cited a subject for alleged hunting violations in Lafayette Parish on September 20.

Sam Boersma, 34, of Duson, Louisiana, was cited by agents for shooting squirrels during a closed season.

Boersma was detained by the Duson Police Department for discharging a firearm within city limits. The Duson Police Department then contacted LDWF agents about Boersma’s squirrel harvesting. When LDWF Senior Agent Nelson Kennerson arrived on the scene, he discovered Boersma with two freshly harvested squirrels. The fall squirrel season begins on October 1. The two squirrels were seized by agents.

Squirrel hunting within a closed season is punishable by a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in prison. Boersma could also face civil restitution for the $40 replacement value of the squirrels he illegally took.
