Electrical Problem Suspected as Cause of Fire in Louisiana that Claimed One Life
Louisiana – The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office (LASFM) revealed on September 20, 2022, that it is continuing its investigation into a deadly house fire in Cotton Valley.
The Cotton Valley Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire in the 200 block of Sikes Ferry Road at about 4 a.m. on Friday, September 16. Unfortunately, firefighters discovered a man victim inside a bedroom.
The Webster Parish Coroner’s Office is still working on official identification and cause of death, but the victim is thought to be the 44-year-old homeowner.
LASFM deputies found the fire started in the home’s laundry room area after assessing the scene and collecting witness accounts.
Authorities stated that, while the exact cause is unknown, they have not ruled out the likelihood of an electrical problem in the home’s wiring as a contributing factor.
When it comes to electrical safety, the LASFM advises against using extension cords and power strips to establish power sources where there isn’t a wall outlet or between two structures. Also, only use those cords and strips for short periods. In addition, if you have any electrical concerns in or around your home, contact a qualified electrician. Deputies were also unable to establish the presence of functioning smoke alarms in the home. The LASFM wants to remind all Louisiana citizens that smoke alarms can be the difference between life and death in a fire. Operations Save-A-Life can assist you in obtaining smoke alarms for your home. Visit our website at lasfm.org to learn more about Operation Save-A-Life.
