Sulphur Man Arrested for DWI and Vehicular Homicide in Connection with Crash on Etienne Daigle Road

Sulphur, Louisiana – According to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, on August 20, 2022, at about 1:00 a.m., CPSO deputies responded to a call about a man being hit by a truck near the intersection of Etienne Daigle Road and Raleigh Reed Road in Sulphur.

The first investigation indicated that Mark E. Brock, 61, of Sulphur, Louisiana, was driving a pickup truck northbound on Etienne Daigle Road when he struck a pedestrian who was walking in the middle of the northbound lane.

Jonathan P. Hatfield, 42, of Lake Charles, Louisiana was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

When deputies spoke with Brock, they reportedly detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from his breath, and he admitted to drinking. Following Brock's poor performance on standard field sobriety tests, a warrant was issued for a blood draw for toxicology testing.

Brock was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on DWI 1st and vehicular homicide charges. His bond was still pending at the time this was published.

Several circumstances, including the absence of street lighting, are thought to have led to the fatality.

Sgt. Terry Faulk of the CPSO is the case's principal investigator.

A mugshot was not available at the time this was published because in order for the mugshot to be released for the charge of vehicular homicide the suspect’s BAC must be greater than .20%. Brock’s BAC was still pending toxicology testing at the time this was published.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
