Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Incident in Louisiana After Being Struck by a Vehicle on LA 1043
Louisiana – According to Louisiana State Police, on August 16, 2022, soon after 4:15 a.m., Troopers from LSP Troop L began investigating a fatal pedestrian crash on LA Hwy 1043 near Carl Day Lane in St. Helena Parish. Damarius Melvin, 22, of Greensburg, Louisiana was killed in the crash.
Melvin was wearing dark apparel and was in the northbound lane on LA Hwy 1043, according to a preliminary inquiry. A 2003 Dodge Ram was heading north on LA Hwy 1043 around the same time. Melvin was hit by the Dodge for reasons that are still being investigated.
Melvin sustained fatal injuries in the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Dodge driver was properly restrained and escaped unharmed. Toxicology samples were acquired from Melvin and the Dodge driver for processing as part of the ongoing investigation. This crash is still being investigated.
Pedestrians and motorists alike are reminded to be cautious and aware of their surroundings when on the road. Pedestrian collisions can often be avoided by following some simple safety standards. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or luminous clothes and avoid walking on the road in low-light conditions. Pedestrians must also anticipate that approaching automobiles will not be able to see them, particularly at night. Pedestrians will be safer if they cross roads only in well-lit, designated places and always walk facing traffic.
