Congressman Johnson of Louisiana Applauds the Announcement that the Bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act will be Voted on in the House.
On July 28, 2022, after it was revealed that the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act will receive a vote on the U.S. House floor, United States Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana issued the following statement:
“A floor vote on this bipartisan legislation is long overdue. This bill will restore the benefits to Louisiana teachers, firefighters, and other public servants that they have rightly earned. Our Louisiana delegation has fought to repeal these outdated penalties for as long as I’ve been in Congress and I am delighted the issue will finally get a vote.”
The bipartisan proposal, according to Congressman Johnson, eliminates two antiquated Social Security regulations that presently penalize thousands of Louisiana beneficiaries.
The bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act would eliminate two decades-old rules, the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset, which lower Social Security benefits for people who receive other benefits, such as a state or local government pension. The bill would abolish these penalties for thousands of Louisiana residents and their spouses who have received these benefits.
The Act recently received 290 bipartisan cosponsors in the House, triggering an automatic House floor vote at a later date to be announced. Congressman Johnson has signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill.
