Louisiana Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Killing Pregnant Woman and Unborn Child

Lake Charles, Louisiana – On July 22, 2022, the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office announced that Vernell A. Chatman, Jr., 35, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, was sentenced to 32 years in prison on one count of Manslaughter and 8 years in prison on one count of Second Degree Feticide by Judge Michael Canaday.

Chatman, Jr was found guilty on April 18, 2022.

The sentences total 40 years in prison and must be served consecutively.

Chatman choked and brutally beat an 8-month pregnant woman in 2019 before abandoning her body in the freezing cold. As a result of their injuries, the victim and her unborn child died.

Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office Assistant District Attorneys Charles Robinson and Taylor Alexander prosecuted the case.
