Deputy-Involved Shooting on U.S. 167 Being Investigated by Louisiana State Police, One Subject Dead

The Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office (WPSO) requested that the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations (LSP BOI) investigate a deputy-involved shooting on May 25, 2022, shortly after 5:00 p.m., according to Louisiana State Police. The Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) was involved in the incident, which occurred on US Highway 167 near Dodson. LSP BOI detectives responded to the scene.
According to the preliminary investigation, JPSO deputies responded to a disturbance at the Forest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jonesboro.
As deputies approached the facility, they noticed the suspect driving a vehicle away from the scene. The suspect was later identified as Abe Banks, 53, of Jonesboro, Louisiana. Deputies attempted to stop Banks, but he refused, resulting in a vehicle pursuit. The pursuit continued on US Highway 167 south into Winn Parish. During the pursuit, Banks’ vehicle suffered a mechanical failure and came to a stop in the middle of the road.
Banks refused to comply with deputies’ commands as they approached the vehicle. Shots were fired during the incident, and Banks was hit. Banks suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. No one else was hurt in the incident.
The Louisiana State Police will be in charge of the investigation. This is still an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
