Louisiana Troopers Update on Multi-Vehicle Fatal Crash on I-10 in Lake Charles

Lake Charles, LA – Troopers were able to secure new evidence related to this crash as the investigation continues. The 18-wheeler driver has been found and cleared of any wrongdoing or criminal intent. According to new evidence, the driver of the Ford, 51-year-old Silvano Nava Retana of Sulphur, was traveling west on the paved inside shoulder of I-10 near milepost 35. Retana steered his vehicle to the right and sideswiped the 18-wheeler trailer’s rear left side tires. Following the collision, the Ford crossed the center median and collided with the Toyota in the eastbound lanes of traffic. Additional charges are possible, and the crash is still being investigated.

Lake Charles, LA  – Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a multiple vehicle hit-and-run crash on Interstate 10 near Interstate 210 in Calcasieu Parish on March 7, 2022, shortly after 10:15 p.m. Narlyn Chinchilla-Lopez, 23, of San Antonio, Texas, and an unidentified passenger was killed in the crash.

An unidentified 18-wheeler, driven by an unidentified driver, was discovered to be traveling west on I-10. The 18-wheeler driver sideswiped a 2003 Ford F250 pickup truck for unknown reasons. The collision caused the Ford driver to lose control and cross the center median into the opposing lane of travel. The Ford collided head-on with an eastbound 2020 Toyota Corolla driven by Lopez.

The Toyota was then rear-ended by a 2008 Honda Civic.

Lopez and the unidentified rear passenger were killed at the scene after suffering fatal injuries. The rear passenger’s positive identification is still pending. The front seat passenger in the Toyota was injured moderately. The occupants of the Ford and Honda suffered only minor injuries, and seat belt use is unknown at this time. Toxicology samples were collected from known drivers, and results are still pending. This crash is still being investigated.

The 18-wheeler is described as a yellow tractor with a refrigerated box trailer and HLB480175 on the side. The 18-wheeler was last seen traveling west on I-10 near mile marker 34. Troopers ask that anyone with information regarding this crash contact Louisiana State Police Troop D at 337-491-2511.

Troop D has investigated 3 fatal crashes resulting in 4 deaths in 2022.
