Louisiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting after a man was shot while charging an officer with a screwdriver.
Louisiana – The Houma Police Department (HPD) asked the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations to look into an officer-involved shooting on November 1, 2021.
The Houma Police Department got a complaint concerning a disturbance at an address on Downtown Court in the municipal boundaries of Houma at approximately 4:11 p.m. According to the preliminary investigation by Louisiana State Police Detectives, 36-year-old Johnny Magee of Houma charged the officer with a screwdriver shortly after the first HPD officer got on the scene. Magee proceeded to advance as another officer arrived on the scene, despite the officer’s demands to stop and establish distance.
Magee raised his arm, screwdriver in hand, toward one of the cops, prompting the officer to fire his service weapon.
Magee was hit by gunfire and sent to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. The event resulted in no policemen being hurt.
The Louisiana State Police is in charge of the investigation. The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office aided with the investigation. Additional information will be disclosed as the investigation progresses and evidence is examined.
