Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Arrests Washington Marion Student for Gun in Backpack

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Calcasieu Parish School Board have released information regarding a Washington Marion student arrested for having a gun in his backpack on November 6, 2019.
From the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office – Earlier today Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives were notified in reference to a gun on the campus at Washington Marion High School.
A student reported to the CPSO School Resource Officer that a 16-year-old boy had a gun in his backpack at school. After a search of the 16-year old’s backpack, an unloaded gun was found, along with one live round wrapped in some paper.
The juvenile was arrested and will be charged with possession of a weapon in a firearm free zone. The student who reported to the SRO that a gun was in a backpack will be recommended for a reward under a special Crimestopper program that encourages students to report guns on school campuses.
CPSO Detective Michael Miller is the lead investigator on the case.
From the Calcasieu Parish School Board – This information is for the parents and guardians of students at Washington Marion High School regarding an incident that occurred on campus today. An unloaded gun was confiscated from a student who brought the item to school. At no time were students and faculty threatened. The situation was handled quickly by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office school safety officer with assistance from school administration. We are confident in our crisis management plans and continuously practice our safety protocols and procedures. The proper protocols were followed today thanks to our staff’s dedication to preparing for such situations.
