7-Year-Old Louisiana Child Dies, Dog Owner Charged with Negligent Homicide After Dog Attack in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, Louisiana - A 7-year-old child in Louisiana died after being attacked by a dog in Baton Rouge on January 6, 2023.  

The dog owner has been charged with negligent homicide in connection with the death of a child after allegedly failing to confine or restrain a dog and leaving it to roam the neighborhood.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office was contacted by EMS and the St. George Fire department on January 6, 2023, at 6:35 in reference to a dog attacking a small child in the 25000 block of Kendalwood Road.

A 7-year-old child was transported to the hospital and later passed away as a result of her injuries.

"This is an awful, heart-breaking tragedy," Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said. "My heart goes out to this family, and they will remain in my prayers."

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office homicide is currently investigating the case. Animal Control was notified and has the dog in custody. Updates will be provided as available.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty.
