55-Year-Old Louisiana Man Arrested in Connection with Drug Overdose Death in LaPlace

St John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana – A 55-year-old Louisiana man has been arrested in connection with a January drug overdose death in LaPlace.

The St John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office stated on April 3, 2023, that Clyde Madere Jr., 55, of LaPlace, Louisiana, was arrested on Sunday, April 2 in connection with the drug overdose death of Shelbi Ory, 31, also of LaPlace.

On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at about 8:15 a.m., officers arrived to the 100 block of Rue DuBourg Drive in LaPlace in regard to an unresponsive woman discovered in a residence. Officers discovered the female identified as Ory when they arrived. Deputies also inspected the bedroom where Ory was discovered and uncovered evidence of drug usage.
Ory was taken to a local hospital by emergency personnel and later pronounced dead. The St. John Parish Coroner’s Office later ruled that the cause of death was acute fentanyl intoxication.

Officers reportedly discovered Madere supplied the fentanyl that finally caused Ory’s death after a rigorous two-month investigation in which narcotics detectives questioned various witnesses and did numerous hours of surveillance on Madere.

Based on their research, police acquired a judicial warrant for Madere’s arrest. According to reports, he was arrested and charged with second-degree murder on April 2, 2023, according to La. RS14:30.4: When the offender unlawfully distributes or dispenses a controlled dangerous substance listed in Schedules I through V of the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law, or any combination thereof, to another who subsequently distributes or dispenses such controlled dangerous substance which is the direct cause of the death of the person who ingested or consumed the controlled dangerous substance.

During an interview with detectives, Madere admitted to selling drugs to Ory the night she died. He is being kept in jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond imposed by Judge Sterling Snowdy.
“We will continue to aggressively pursue any individual who sells these dangerous drugs that lead to someone’s death,” Sheriff Mike Tregre said. “The Sheriff’s Office will continue to conduct thorough narcotics death investigations. These dealers will be held fully accountable for a crime that costs lives and negatively impacts our community.”

Madere has been arrested 50 times in St. John Parish on narcotics and other crimes since 1986. Madere pled guilty to negligent homicide in 2008 after shooting a man after an argument. He was sentenced to five years in prison and served two of them.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
